『秘密の花園』読み比べ
たまにしか「英語本」は取り上げないと、宣言した舌の根も乾かないうち、またふと思い立って、手元にあるThe Secret Garden4冊を読み比べてみることにしました。

右２冊は、本文は全く同じで、Burnettの原著通りなのでしょう。
左は小学校低学年、次が中学年、左２冊は高学年以上といったところでしょうか。
日本人の英語レベルで言うなら、順に中３以上、高１以上、高２以上？
左２冊は易しく書き直したretold版ですから、スラスラ読めて然るべきなのですが、実は一番左の、一番簡単なものしか読んだことがなかったのです。（購入したのは20数年前なのに！）
さすがにこのレベルならストレスなく読めました。以下の映画で内容がある程度わかっていたこともあったと思います。（ヨークシャ訛りの英語もほぼわかりましたし）
左から２番目のになると、文字数、ページ数も多くなり、ちょっとだけ読んだ形跡はあるものの、途中で止めていました。
３冊目はペンギン社版ですが、レベル別のretoldではなく、原著のままのようです。
巻末にEXPLANATORY NOTESがあって、難しい言葉、独特な表現などの説明がなされています。
３冊の書き出しと、締め括りの部分を平易な順に引用してみますね。
retold版の２冊はどちらも50数ページですが、ページ当たりの文字数がかなり違うので、２番目のは結構読み応えがありました。
３番目は、さらに文字数が多い上、250ページを超えているので、実はまだ部分的にしか読み終えていません。
ではまず書き出しから。（上から順にLadybird版、Oxford Bookworms版、Penguin Books版）
Mary Lennox was a spoilt, and bad-tempered child. She was never really well, and she was thin, miserable and sour-faced. No one liked her at all.
None of this was really Mary's own fault. She was born in India, where her father worked. He was always busy with his work, and paid no attintion to his daughter. Her mother was very pretty, and cared only for parties and pleasure. She left Mary in the care of an Indian nursemaid, who gave the little girl everything she wanted so that she would not cry and upset her mother. So not surprisingly, Mary grew up into a spoilt and most umpleasant girl.
Nobody seemed to care aboout Marry. She was born in India, where her father was a British official. He was busy with his work, and her mother, who was very beautiful, spent all her time going to paties. So Indian woman,Kamala was paid to take care of the little girl. Mary was not pretty child. She was always giving orders to Kamala, who had to obey. Mary never thougt of other people, but only of herself. In fact, She was very selfish, disagreeable, bad-tempered little girl.
retold版は、かなり要約されているので、書き出しは違いますが、簡潔にメアリーの生い立ちを紹介していますね。父は仕事に忙しく、美人の母はパーティなどに明け暮れ、娘のことを全く顧みない。ゆえに彼女の風貌や性格が「可愛くない」のはメアリー自身が悪いわけではなく、当たり前のことだ、と。
続いて３番目、Penguin Books版
When Marry Lennox was sent to Misselthwaite Manor to live with her uncle everybody said she was the most desagreeable-looking child ever seen. It was true, too. She had a little thin face and a little thin body, thin light hair and a sour expression.
Her hair was yellow, and her face was yellow because she had been born in India and had always been ill in way or another. Her father had held a possition under the English Government and had always been busy and ill himself, and her mother had been a great beauty who cared only to go to parties and amuse herself with gay people. She had not wanted a little girl at all, and when Mary was born she handed her over to the care of an Ayah, who was ～（後略）
上２冊のように順を追っての描写ではなく、いきなり「おじさんの屋敷」が出てきますから、やはりこれはある程度の年齢にならないと読みこなせないのではと思い、
元々はどれ位の年齢層を対象に書かれたものか調べたところ、８歳～12歳向けとなっていました。
う～ん、８歳からですか・・・小学校２、３年生にはちょっと難しすぎるような気が・・・
ちなみに高校のリーダーの副読本として採用されていたりもするのだとか。翻訳を読んだり、映画を見たりして、予備知識を持ったうえでなら読みやすいと思いますが、いきなりだと結構難しい気がします。
逸れましたね。では締め括りの読み比べ。
"Now,"said Colin, "it needn't be a secret any more. I shall never need my chair again. I shall walk with you, father!"
They stood up and walked towards the house. At Mr Craven's side, strong and straight as any lad in Yorkshire, walked his son.
"Now," said Colin at the end, "it isn't a secret anymore. I'll never use the wheelchair again. I'm going to walk back with you, Fatherーto the house."
And so that afternoon, Mrs Medlock, Marth, and the other servants had the greatest shock of thier lives. Through the garden towards the house came Mr Claven, looking happier than they had even seen him. And by his side, with his shoulders straight, his head held high and smile on his lips, walked young Colin!

"Now," he said at the end of the story, "it need not be a secret any more.
このあと、1ページ半に渡り、細かい描写が続いた後、以下のように締め括ります。
Across the lawn came Master of Misselthwaite and he looked as many of them had never seen him. And by his side with his head up in the air and his eyes full of laughter walked as storongly and steadily as any boy in Yorkshire ー Mater Colin!
書き出しと違い、ラストは、表現は異なるものの、全く同じシーンで終わっていますね。（映画もラジオシアター版もそうでした。）
以下、付け足しです。
私は小学生の頃、村岡花子訳の「小公女」（A Little Princess）は読んだことがあったのですが、「小公子」（Little Lord Fauntleroy）も「秘密の花園」も読んだことがありませんでした。
Little Lord Fauntleroyは、Oxford Bookwormsにもあり、The Secret Garden より平易なレベル１、こちらも20数年前に購入はしていたものの、読了したのはつい最近です。
「リトル・プリンセス」も「秘密の花園」同様、映画を見てからハマり、洋書を買ったのですが、こちらはまだ全然読んでおりません。（いつになることやら・・・）
右のA Little Princessの挿絵も大好きなTasha Tuder、それもあって購入したのだけれど、本棚の肥やしになっているうちに、カビが・・・。
この本は、Ages 9 up となっています。してみるとやはりThe Secret Gardenの方は10歳以上じゃないかなぁ？
以上、秘密の花園から始まって、バーネットの児童文学３部作を取り上げました。
ガラッと変わって、現在読んでいるのは、ユヴァル・ノア・ハラリのNEXUS（ネクサス）情報の人類史。
武雄図書館の新刊コーナーに下巻しかなかったので（上巻は貸し出し中？）そちらだけ借りてその日のうちに半分以上読んだのですが、それから日が空いています。
